Call Of The Echo, Part One

Nick closed his eyes. Everything seemed to slow down. The racers revved their engines, ready to fly off the starting line. Nick's hands closed tightly around the steering wheel as he awaited the moment the flag would wave.
Nick took a nervous glance at the opponent next to him. It was the racer known as 'Traceless'. This mysterious racer rarely spoke, stayed away from the press, and was never in a good mood. Even so, whoever it was could be the next racing champion.
Suddenly Nick was snapped out of his thoughts as the flag was waved and someone shouted "GO!". The race cars flew off the starting lines, tires screeching. Nick instantly pulled into the lead, closely followed by Skipper, a racing champion who was always underestimated, who was followed by Hunter, the British racer who spoke rather harshly to his opponents.
Car racing was thrilling for the drivers, and they were no doubt very brave people. But accidents occur often, and that's what 'Traceless', Hunter, Skipper, and Nick were about to find out.
Nick hit the brakes hard as he came around a corner. Tires squealed and screamed as the other racers followed him. Then Skipper, in his white car, whizzed by him. "Later, slowpoke!" Skipper shouted over the radio. 'Traceless' then passed, followed by Hunter. The laps went by, and soon the racers were on the final lap. None of the more experienced drivers could pull ahead, so 'Traceless', Hunter, Nick, and Skipper were neck in neck.
The finish line drew nearer and nearer. The four racers fought hard for the coveted spot of winner, each determined to get it.
The announcer got very excited as he commentated on the end lap. "Final corner, racers 14, 28, 86, and 49 are in the lead! This is going to be a close one! And the winner is....." The announcer got cut off by the sound of metal scraping against metal. The four leaders had crashed, and quite severely. Metal twisted and bent, paint got scraped, and tires squealed. Nick just saw his car get hit head on, and then he and the other racers blacked out.
